Tom McHugh and Tom Anthony hail from Maryland’s Eastern Shore, where traditional watermens' communities still prosper. McHugh (some folks may remember him as "The Banjo Man") has spent decades chronicling the activities of his neighbors in Rock Hall, capturing their stories in verse and song. Besides the banjo, McHugh plays flute and harmonica, while Anthony thumbs along on his stand-up bass. Their program combines nostalgia, humor and hard facts, and is as entertaining as it is informative. According to Kate Livie (Director of Education and Associate Curator at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum), who witnessed a recent performance, McHugh and Anthony “transported the audience with an hour of wonderful Chesapeake-inspired tunes, punctuated by McHugh’s anecdotes and stories about life in a working maritime community—lyrical, witty and charmingly infused with a uniquely Chesapeake sense of place.”
The Havre de Grace Maritime Museum Summer Concert Series is brought to you with the support of the Maryland State Arts Council and donations from the general public. Thank you.
