Meet the Coywolf
We had 38 attendees at the screening of the PBS documentary “Coywolf” on July 12. The film was followed by a presentation on the status of coyotes in Maryland of Jim Bennett of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The audience was very engaged and stayed until about 8:45 p.m. when we concluded the program. The basic theme of the film and the DNR presentation is that the Eastern coyote (aka coywolf) is very adaptable to human habitation, a prolific breeder despite no limits on hunting them, and the species in Maryland has spread throughout most of the state. The film demonstrated that they can live in densely populated areas and remain undetected by most people. Their main prey is small animals and birds, but they are omnivorous and will eat vegetables and bird seed and cat food left outside. People should definitely NOT feed them, which can lead to problems.
