Water Quality Workshop for Children
The Environmental Center hosted a water quality workshop for kids on Saturday, October 20th, in the basics of water quality to local children. On Saturday, the kids and their families tested water at several different locations around Concord Point. Logan Poore and Sarah Shpak of the Environmental Center used the field experience to teach the kids how their actions can impact water quality. The kids used a secchi tube and learned how to measure turbidity. They then tested pH, phosphate, nitrogen and dissolved solids. With their data recorded, the children discussed their results. They determined which location had the best water quality, why some areas were worse than others, and what might be done to increase the quality in these damaged areas.
Additionally, with the new storm water projects going on in the area, the kids were able to learn about how the storm water system filters runoff before it reaches the Bay. Both the kids and the parents were able to see how humans can influence ecosystems to better manage and filter storm water.
Our hope in doing this workshop was to educate kids on the basics of water quality, how their actions at home impact the water quality of the Bay, and how they can help improve water quality at home.
