Nicole Singer, an unlikely chanteyman with her youthful good looks and exuberant energy (no crusty old salt is she!), began singing songs of the sea long before she took a job as professional crew aboard the Mystic Whaler, out of New London, CT. But, shipboard life only added to her robust and charming repertoire of songs gleaned from the traditional canon, as well as a few “modern” chanteys she’s picked up along the way (she’s also done stints aboard the Clearwater). A strong solo performer, she occasionally works with The Johnson Girls, the fabled all-female chantey group from New England. Her shows are disarmingly simple, her voice steady and sure, her repartee witty and engaging. Her long-awaited first CD, Long Hot Summer Days, reflects her assiduous adherence to the oral musical tradition and carries it forward.
