Maryland Safe Boating Course
On the weekend of June 23-24, 2018, thirty-eight people participated in the Maryland Safe Boating course that was held at the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum. In Maryland, the law states that anyone born on or after July 1, 1972, must possess a certificate of boating safety education to operate any motorized vessel. (If a Certificate of Boating Safety Education cannot be produced on request by a law enforcement officer, a minimum fine of $25 for the first offense and up to $500 for each additional offense can be imposed.)
This 8-hour course satisfies the requirements for operating a vessel on Maryland waters, and a Maryland Department of Natural Resources Certificate of Boating Safety Education is issued upon satisfactory completion.
The course is taught in a 2-day (four hours each day) format. Attendance at both sessions is required. The fee for this course is $35 per person. The fee for First Responders and Active Duty Military is waived.
The instructor for this course is a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
In addition to this June course offering, the course was also held at the Maritime Museum in March, April, and May.
The Havre de Grace Maritime Museum will host a “How to Read Nautical Charts” class this winter.
